Mavina Gudi Colony
Mavina Gudi Colony - Life of 80's & 90s Kids.
When I heard this name.. Mavu – Mango, Gudi – Remembers ours own Basavangudi and Colony – Off course my childhood Vattara (colony).. this all made beautiful picture in my mind.
And 1 year back when my friend Srini told that, this is a story of 80s kids, it’s really gave goose bumps
Life in the 80’s growing up in India was Great !!
Social life was active and people met each other a lot. Each evening we would have family friends and visitors and there would be chats and fun times at our jagali katte. Even Beladingala oota (Full moon dinner), kai tuttu oota(Food is rolled in the hand and given to each person) and as a kid we can go and have food in any of the friends, neighbor or relatives house without any prior permission or approvals…
We also read a lot of books. Students would get books from the school library and would chat with each other about that. We would also exchange books with each other.
Magazines were also very popular and once we had read some, we would pass on to each other, chandamama stories was our favourite
Groups of friends would organize a get – together and gather and watch movies and have snacks. Buying a good video cassette was also a great expensive option.
Going to watch movies in the theatre was also very popular and sometimes parents would organize and take other neighbour kids along with their own to watch a movie.
Travelling and Visiting relatives during school holidays was very popular. After the holiday we would write letters to our cousins and send photographs, and pressed flowers. We would also write letters to our grandparents and also send birthday cards to family members. It was a privilege to receive cards on birthdays and festivals.
All in all it was a simpler time, where the main focus was socializing in person. The activities were more outdoors and there were no brand name clothes or competition for new phones or cars.
TV had also started and had fewer but some great shows like Chandrakantha, Mowgli, Shanthi, Surabhi, Dekh Bhai Dekh, Hum Panch, Alif Laila, Dsisney world etc were our favourites.
Kids use to go out and play, boys used to play Buguri(Top), Chinni dandu, goli, kalla(Chor) police, mara khoti and girls used to play kunte bille, kannna mucche or we all used to enjoy indoor board games chenna mane, snake and ladder, ludo etc.
Life in the 80s and 90s in India was fun, dynamic, well informed and devoid of major negative ,political, & religious differences.
It is not just the forests and villages that are swept by the waves of development and globalization, even the cities are caught in the web and have lost their charm and glory. In the mad rush for development, the cultural roots are washed away and this trend is spreading like an epidemic. The people of the city wearing a proud badge of progress, when they turn around and look at the places from where they grew up, are not only surprised but shocked. It is as important to save the cultural traits of a city as it is to save a forest or a village.
Mavinagudi colony brings back the nostalgic elements of one's life and draws attention towards the effects of progress and globalization.
